The tray insert is top rack dishwasher safe but it is recommended that the outer shell be hand washed

These containers have sealed sections so you can add dip applesauce yogurt etc and not have it leak out

I did read a review i think on the actual yumbox website that said the same thing i was just hoping that it wasnt true
