I couldnt use my standard cell phone charger cable because even though it used the same usb connection on the power source end the input on the jump starter is the new type micro c and the phone charger cable is micro b this adapter solved the problem

The micro type c apparently does the same thing as a micro b but allows the connection to be made on either side
