Why this is important is cardioid mics have an upsidedown heartshaped pickup pattern this means that they capture mostly from the front not so well from the sides and reject sound at the rear

Some mics are seemingly more sensitive to the more high frequency annoyance sounds around the house that you wouldnt have in a properly treated recording studio
