Pros & Cons
Pros
The wixey measuring device is very accurate and very easy to use and also is very repeatable. It is easily calibrated and holds its calibration after being turned off. Never had a problem with the accuracy, calibration, or disturbance from vibration.
Wixey wr550 is a great addition to my powermatic. Installed on a makita model 2030 planer/joiner combination machine. Replacement for the already mentioned powermatic factory dro. This is light years better than the powermatic depth guage.
This is a very easy to use & versatile gauge that will fit on any large surface planer. Readout in decimal inches, fractions and millimeters. Bought two of these, one for my wide=belt sander.
Very nice to now be able to plane lumber to precise thickness, no longer having to check with my caliper.
Repeat cuts are easily obtainable. There's repeatability, and there's accuracy. In woodworking, repeatability is king.
Cons
Almost everytime i use it, i have to recalibrate it. The built in method is useless. It feels a a little cheap - like a harbor freight digital caliper.
Highlights
Quality
All in all i am very pleased with the purchase
The quality is impressive and the set up took only a few minutes
Its easy to mount the unit so it measures backwards and not so easy to figure out what you did wrong even with the instructions
I mistakenly mounted it upside down with the result that the readout reads in negative numbers
Shipping
The wr550 came within a couple days and was packaged very well to eliminate shipping damage
Packaging/appearance
I was hesitant after reading reviews on the powermatic dro extremely happy i chose the wixey
On the powermatic planer the wr550 was mounted to the outfeed table which takes 15 minutes if youre slow
Was a little painful installing had to rig up a wooden bracket
Competitiveness
They have 12 photos of the unit mounted on a powermatic 15hh my planer
It is a great improvment for the planner operations
The powermatic dro also received negative reviews online
Took an hour and a half to install on my powermatic 15hh planer
