Soft charcoal creates a deep black line that is more difficult to erase and can damage the paper when you do so do not use soft for the initial stage

In this stage the large shadows are lightly placed

While it is tempting do this with more pressure and a medium stick dont
Posted by a reviewer on Amazon
Pressure imbeds charcoal particles into the page and it makes corrections more difficult

Also dont buy a kneaded eraser

Kneaded erasers do not lift as well and the pressure required to pick up the particles always imbeds at least some of them
