From the users perspective the thermal plasmas focused beam of heat is whats important for lighting a cigarette or in reality anything that can fit between the electrodes

The reason for not using this lighter to ignite something big and damp is that while the arc is extremely hot its also extremely focused so the contact spot is very small which means that it would take a long time to heat up a damp object to its flash point followed by its flame point

However while i could stick a rare earth magnet to the housing which is not unexpected since it is metallic the magnet didnt stick as strongly as i would have thought if there was a strong magnet in a solenoid

Apart from the loud whine the other other potential downside is that the enclosed instructions are very very tiny
