The two novels in this book are early works for haruki murakami. Not nearly as surreal as his later work, but still suffused with the existential loneliness which characterizes a lot of his writing.
Pinball" has that touch of surrealism that murakami does so well. This is early murakami, where he's clearly still developing his voice.

A chinese bartender plays a role in both stories. The narrator also encounters a girl who works in a local record shop. It's a narrative featuring ordinary people undergoing not-so-ordinary experiences.

But fans of dance dance dance and a wild sheep chase owe it to themselves to find out what harkened both at the beginning of the author’s career and the origin of the rat and the unnamed narrator

Having read most of murakamis books and encountered the rat in another book

But because it is short it does not require the commitment needed to read examples such as 1q84 killing commendatore or the wind up bird chronicle but which offer bigger rewards in the end in his characteristic surrealistic style this book traverses a short time of the main characters life in tokyo along with his friend the rat and an unnamed girlfriend along with passages of autobiographical moments recollected by the main character

I guess i read it looking for a plot line but it somewhat meanders with the only theme that i could find was life and death

As an alternative to this i recommend some of his other shorter books such as norwegian wood kafka on the shore and wild sheep chase along with his earlier mentioned longer novels where he had time to develop a better plot line and characters
