Never put anything on a scale heavier than its maximum weight whether its powered on or not as that can damage the sensor

Remember that the force of acceleration is the equivalent of a larger mass so dropping an allowable weight package on the scale is equivalent to placing an overweight package on the scale and could very easily damage the sensor
