It would activate with no one pushing the buttons and would stay that way for a few minutes and then continue to come on

But if you want the quick and dirty simply press menu then the up and down keys and set your units to the same number showing on the screen

The flashlight does point away from the device body so you cant use it to see the device itself the lcd display has a blue backlight which turns off after about a second to save power but is on while you fiddle with the settings
