I would argue that their cars or battery were the problem not the leads

If your car has a completely dead battery no amount of jumping is gonna help you jumping is for weak batteries not dead ones

Of course aluminium cored wire is not as efficient or as expensive as copper cores so the cable is thicker than a copper cored lead would be
