Basically if you know well before hand that you are going to be running around with a load on your back most of the day then youre better off using a basic school backpack or a higher quality purpose built daypack

Your main sources of water penetration as with any pack will be the seams and the zippers seam sealer can be used to mitigate this issue as well

The top rear pocket on the pack has its zipper well protected by a flap of fabric so this pocket is perhaps the least vulnerable to any precipitation it is also sewed to expand allowing it to hold more than it first appears

I stored a large collapsing umbrella in one and a 20oz bottle of water in the other and both items were very secure never came close to falling out
