Pros & Cons
Pros
The characters are recognizable and likeable, and the storyline is interesting. Henry travels to 1888 after multiple trips to world war ii.
Connie willis is a wizard on a par with the best. S. Forester, dorothy sayers, p. Barnum are among her influences.
The book is tremendously enjoyable. The conclusion delights and devastates me at once. The audiobook read by stephen crossley is really dynamic and adds to the enjoyment.
We do get a taste for both the panic and the dazed numbness that people experience in such situations. This book also has time travel and some of the same characters as doomsday.
Cons
It pretends to be an english comedy of manners, a la oscar wilde or pg wodehouse. It mentions lady windermere's fan and refers to someone as being like jeeves more than once. Seems to be mostly boring, humorless dialogue.
I quit reading this after about 75 kindle pages. This book has no intriguing insight into any question of interest. If you want mindless reading here ya go.

For whatever reason the genre of time travel seems rife with dumbeddown prose so i was ready to be disappointed yet again when the recommendation for this book landed in my email inbox
