Ken follett is a published novelist, for goodness' sake. There's no reason for grammatical or punctuation errors to show up.

It reads as though it were an f-minus, incipient work, in a 101 creative writing class. The kindle edition is badly edited. There are formatting errors in the ebook version.
The characters are two-dimensional and not really believable. Many of the characters' choices, reactions, and lines were laughably unrealistic. The plot is interesting but the characters and dialogue were childish.
