Quality

Forester is an absolute master of writing about naval matters and his quality is on abundant display here

Though written with the war effort in mind it gives a dramatic view of the workings of a warship during a few hours of combat

The book starts with the story of the officer whos task is to feed an entire ships crew while they are at action stations

Shipping

It has a complement of several hundred but the conceit here is that forester treats them as cells or organs in the body of the ship

The ship includes a wealth of authentic detail on royal navy practice custom and procedure

The ship was based on a real british navy ship

That includes the ship as a character itself

Competitiveness

Not as facinating as the hornblower series but worth the time
