Pros

Rosamunde pilcher writes long, spectacularly descriptive stories about very real people. At the heart of the story is penelope keeling, a most complex and amazing woman. Penelope is a survivor who made do with very little during wwii.

The shell seekers is a multigenerational story of a woman and her family. All of them have both virtues and flaws. But the good guys aren't nicer people than the bad guys.

Cons

Penelope is one of the most sanctimonious vicious characters i have ever had the misfortune to meet. Though the baby is pretty and engaging, plays well, etc, penelope doesn't see where she came from. This cements her bohemian mother's dislike of her.

Why olivia is special i have no idea, as i see her as cold and unsympathetic. Penelope also acts like it isn't her fault noel and nancy behave the way they do, but does she realize that as a mother, she is very much to blame for preferring olivia?

The story is dreadfully slow. Some things are very repetitive. And it still infuriates me.
