Cons

A villian from a previous novel resurfaces, and his appearance is silly. Characters are astonishingly bland and two-dimensional.

Every book since his return has beena dud. It's like it just delved into nonsense the last third of the book. Go back to the the morgue.

After all these years cornwell has a rusty scalpel on this one. I know she recently won a lawsuit where she sued her former financial managers as they had mishandled funds. This is the first cornwell book that i won't be finishing.

Lucy is gay and likes techno objects, yeh we get it. Unfortunately, lucy's character is still a petulant annoyance. Kay is not a likable person.

The scenes with benton are boring. I agree, benton is a cardboard cut-out. This book has a lengthy patch of extremely lame dialogue where bent on is apparently being psychoanalyzed.

Quality

I had to take breaks for a while but was able to get right back into it and proceed with the great writing

While the reader may indeed prefer a more cathartic conclusion between scarpetta and the chandonnes the tale is still undeniably riveting

The return of jeanbaptiste chandonne however is not at all what may have been expected instead of dr

Scarpetta uncovering the escaped serial murderers resurregence through the foresnic analysis of his murders as was the case for temple gault in potters field the readers are told that jeanbaptiste is once again in the picture near the end of the story through the eyes of benton wesley by his former employer the fbi itself

Scarpettas position as a forensic pathologist is once again inconsequential to the climax and conclusion of the story as she does not uncover or solve the mystery through her work ultimately readers are denied a culminating finale for the chandonne arc because scarpetta is herself denied the catharsis of a confrontation with jeanbaptiste through forensic pathology the core mechanic of the kay scarpetta series

Instead like prior entries scarpetta wanders into a trap laid by the killer jeanbaptiste in this instance and she is saved once again through the deus ex machina that is her associates her husband benton being lowered to the proverbial stage for this end
