There was no comeuppance for the villain in the story. They are basically incapable of communicating verbally. It's obvious they had an affair while working together, but no clue as to why it all fell apart.

I would have put the book down if a friend hadnt told me it gets gentler just because this part went on too long and was too negative for me even though the authors signaled that this was a deliberate narrative choice to let the emotions breathe and really show the rift between them
