Pros & Cons
Pros
Recommended for fans of the harry * universe and fans of crime beat reporters. The poet is one of connelly’s earlier books, published in 1996. Throwing in edgar allen poe was a nice touch - i hope it leads some readers to his works. Great plot and as ... Read More
The rachel walling character (fbi profiler) is similar to thomas perry's elizabeth warring character from the 1982 novel, 'butcher boy.
Cons
All his female characters are ever there for is as plot devices. Once again, a male author has to have his male protagonist sleep with a gorgeous, smart, career driven female character.
Jack mcevoy is even less likeable than harry *. The ending is so convoluted its silly. They're all drop-dead gorgeous but have little to no personality.
Highlights
Quality
Very easy to read author with excellent flow and mix of dialog interspersed with piercing thoughts and descriptions
The main characters are well developed so much so that you really care about them especially the female fbi character
The time period is the mid‘90s and i giggled at dialup internet connections faxes pagers landline phones and newfangled digital cameras
Some of the important clues and misdirections would not even exist now
Competitiveness
I’m so happy i found him and bosch and the lincoln lawyer
Another departure is that this is told mostly in firstperson as opposed to the thirdperson bosch novels
Although this novel started off a little slow compared to the bosch series soon you are lulled into the world of who is really the monster

A little far fetched and sometimes just plain unbelievable but an enjoyable read nonetheless

The phases are not just based on character development but on different clues that the author lets the reader in on that change the name of the game throughout the story
