Pros & Cons

Pros

Compelling storyline. Great characters. There are other characters sprinkled throughout that you'll also enjoy. Hours is a real constraint on storytelling here.

The tone is a perfect balance of science and sarcasm. The science just adds a fun flair. It sticks much closer to real science than most sci-fi today.

Andy weir plays mark, a man who is left for dead after being hit by debris from a spaceship.

The martian is one of my favorite films. Dives into the loneliness and self-entertainment while alone on mars. Brought product to surface of mars. The martian weather is unpredictable.

Cons

This is a review of the book i purchased - a product review. I find i can't concentrate on the story for the really awful sound effects/music or whatever they call it distracting me. There is background music that is inappropriate and distracting.

It really read like a middle schooler jotting down everything that came to mind. Wil wheaton is a terrible narrator. Andy weir disgusts me that he calls himself an author.

I really felt as though i was watching on the edge of my seat with the rest of the world to see if mark watney would survive

Just don’t let all the boring science dribble deter you

Astronauts are just too awesome to comprehend sometimes

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

You might assume that this format would make weir’s the martian a slow and dull read but it is anything but boring

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

My main complaint is that every character besides mark watney feels onesided and shallow

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

At the beginning of the novel watney briefly explains his fellow astronauts core personality traits and throughout the novel the other characters seem to feel less and less individual and unique

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Aside from very obvious differences like captain louis’s stereotypical stoicism and alex vogel’s german accent it feels almost as if each of the astronaut’s lines of dialogue could be said by any of the other astronauts

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

This lack of personalization is not a huge problem however because the other astronauts have very little dialogue and are more like side characters than main ones

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

If you are not a fan of chemistry or technology then i would not recommend you this book
