The story of a woman grieving after the unexpected death of the man she loves. The world of magicians, the world of contemporary los angeles. It's a quirky story, which i also enjoy.

It is full of the touchstones of her writing. Her grounding in locations and in details brings the story to life. The lightness of the magical realism she peppers throughout the book adds to the dimension and depth of your experience.

An unexpected family comes into her life, embracing her fully. Each friendship is so full of genuine caring and affection. With sadness, comes anger.

This book lacks that satisfying closure. The subject, a beautiful, intelligent woman falls hopelessly in love with a fully committed homosexual man. I usually love ann patchett, but this was just wierd.
