The dialogue between characters is brilliant and features word play and dry humor. The dialogue in the weird situations is absolutely wonderful. The scene with the doctor as he gets vaccinated is absolutely brilliant.

It is one of the most enjoyable books i've ever read. It's a fast book and you're entertained the entire time. Sometimes you just want a book where you can be like, yup, freaking knew it.

Jamie and his team go on a daredevil mission to retrieve this mythical monster and return her to her world. Jamie is down to earth and relatable, as is the situation that starts him on his journey.

The premise of the book is over the top in a fun way but such humor loses it's effect quickly when used as a crutch. The author inserts a lot of personal politics in a relatively petty manner. It is smug, but not funny.

I like scalzi because of his snark but this book was simple 100% snark to the point of ridiculousness. The story line develops, gets to a point, and then just flattens, never to rise to the heights scalzi is capable of. Kps falls complete flat.

Every character speaks in exactly the same (profane) way. The gay characters make no sense (they seem to be just tacked in to meet a quota) that is until it dawned on me that the them/their bs was not a typo.

The characters, while likeable, lack depth. It's like eating a water *, just kinda bland with forgettable characters.
