Pros & Cons
Pros
A *, an affair, and a past indiscretion connecting two people who never knew until it was too late. There is lots of sadness and the ending will surprise you. You get swept up in the story. And read til the very end.

The characters drip with dignity, grace, and pomp and circumstance. We know two characters re-connect 40 years later, but how / why.
Cons
Kate morton is an exceptional author, and maybe my expectations for this novel were too high. It gives you snippets of a mystery which ins't revealed until the last few pages.
There was no buoyancy of the human spirit displayed. It seems to be defective. This novel is far inferior to its predecessors eg remains if the day.
Highlights
Quality
Grace is totally besotted with the trio
Grace the 14 yearold handmaid tells of her life with the hartford family through wwi and beyond
The film maker turns out to have a connection with the familybut that would spoil the story for you
Morton hits the reader over the head with the sledgehammer of foreshadowing but i really didn’t experience it that way
Price
Riverton is such a beautiful estate set on glorious grounds
Packaging/appearance
Although there were flaws to this debut novel what really bowled me away were the clever plot twists
Competitiveness
It was in excellent condition—better than described by the seller
Think 34downton abbey34 but with more of a 34downstairs34 focus

What didn’t work so well was the pacing
Posted by a reviewer on Amazon
Kate morton has a real talent for description and for setting but too often the pacing was relentlessly slow and the emotional range too small

For example grace’s final realization about who her father actually was unfolded too slowly and made her seem stupid
Posted by a reviewer on Amazon
Morton for her funnytragic use of dialog which shows alltooclearly that grace is not nearly as interested in alfred as alfred is in her
