Pros & Cons
Pros
Every part of it is exciting and filled with sparkling energy. The writing is sublime and the storyline spooky, strange and amazing. The hazel wood is an urban fantasy firmly rooted in the everyday world with delightfully creepy and bizarre characters... Read More

Melissa albert takes some of the typical fairytale tropes and twists them into recognisable, but scarier versions. Albert’s writing is lyrical and evocative and i found myself finally making use of the ‘highlight’ function in my kindle app.
Absolutely devoured this book. It's one of those books that makes the whole world around you disappear, which is a rare thing that should be treasured.
She has a strong voice, and i totally sympathised with her character. I adored all the pop-culture references she would make. They seem to be after alice!
Cons
The hazel wood is so fuzzy and incomprehensible that i found that i just didn't care about it. While the premise of the book had promise, i think it is overwrought. If you love incomprehensible prose, this book is for you.
The fairytale concept was overplayed. Althea's tales are pointless, making the story itself pointless. Finch is a token poc with his wallet as his only redeeming qualities.
