Pros
The only small criticism i could make is that the book falls into the trap of being somewhat pedantic. It is the first book i have read by paul theroux and i am hooked.
Cons
Toward women, it is somewhat worse. It is a man's attitude, not a woman's. But it is a men's attitude to women. The attitude is not the same as the attitude of a man to a woman.

The pace of the book varies with the stop and start of each journey and i guess every reader will prefer some parts to others

Anyone looking for a travel book about destinations will be disappointed this is a book for people who consider the train to be a destination in and of itself with the stations as small inconveniences
