It is a huge detailed work and at times, it does bog down in details. The bibliography is extensive (the last 20%? Fair and balanced. The events/timeline are real, authors perspective seems accurate.

Rileysmiths while it has been updated by the author just tries to cover too much territory it attempts to treat the long spanish reconquista as well as the traditional wars for the holy land from the first crusade up to the two final crusades by king louis ix of france

The author thankfully avoids speaking at too much length on background matters of theology and philosophy

Depending upon our largely ideological perspective the crusades were either a military effort to win back the holy land for christendom or a major effort mounted by the imperialist west to contain and control islam
