You get your missions mass effect style by going to a control panel overlooking the control center and a big board of the us with hot spots on the map

The game also does a great job of laying out imo of how xcom all came about what it was going to be used for back in the cold war what its changing over to be used for in fact when the game starts the base wasnt even finished and has only a skeleton crew manning it when the invasion starts

It answers lots of questions like why does the alien weapons blow up after a kill in xcom enemy within unknown
