Birthday of the world is required reading for leguin fans. The novella paradises lost is the gem of this collection. My favorite story is paradise lost, a story about the culture and mythology that are created in a space vessel.
Le guin is a fantastic writer who deftly weaves a beautiful story of characters, plot, and setting with wholesome, open-minded moral messages. The stories are not rote or predictable in any way.
Cons
Le guin is more like an anthropologist than a'strictly sci-fi' writer. The finger she justa drops off. I mean alien teenager loses virginity sounds impossible to make dull, but you could use the story to sedate rhinos.

Shipping
I love love love stories about colony ships
Generations are born and die upon the ship as it crosses the vastness of space towards its destination
There is only the perfect present the ship the journey
Packaging/appearance
Le guin typical of her selfdeprecating humor talks of her laziness in reusing this setting in her forward
Not in a specieschauvanistic sense but looking deeper into the very question of what makes us human
Competitiveness
Males are venerated and cosseted and do little more than compete in games and impregnate females
Thoughtful a generation ship in route to a new world

Its a change of pace for the author involving not the worlds of the ekumen but rather a generation spacecraft on a 201year voyage from earth to a new earth orbiting some unnamed neighboring star
