While some authors can write this kind of plot and succeed, this one just didn't do it for me. The term alchemy isn't even mentioned until halfway into the story. It's just more confusing.

It appears someone is pulling books out of the scrap pile and selling them for profit. It’s like cheap copied book…. Pages are uneven. Others are ripped.
