These two concert pieces do not get played enough.

The two historic performances - eileen joyce / fitelberg (highly cut version, with a personal rewrite of the final bars) and tatiana nikolaeva / anosov(premiere recording of complete version, issued on lp in uk by monarch in 1954) are both wonderful, and i would put them on a par with the best more modern version i have heard, konstantin scherbakov performing the complete version (one very small cut in cadenza) on naxos, with yablonsky conducting a russian orchestra and playing the solo cello part in the slow movement.

Moura lympany performed the work in russia during the war and her second recording with fistoulari conducting on decca and then ace of clubs was a benchmark for a long time.

In closing, while i realize my overuse of the word magnificent may be annoying, there simply is no better word to describe the playing heard on this disc.
