The bean is actually quite wide and has 2 parts - long beam and all around halo. My only complaint about this light is that the central spot is too narrow, and the surrounding halo is too dim. Produces a tight bright beam at distance.

The low setting is the best for battery charge life. I usually keep it on high and keep a spare set of rechargeable batteries (3 aaa's) the battery holds a charge for hours. Overall battery life is pretty good for a aaa powered light this bright.

The headlamp has three light levels. I like this model because the beam is more focused than some of the other streamlight headlamps. As an automotive technician, seeing in the dark recesses of vehicles is essential.

Three low, medium, and high. Three levels of brightness, the dimmest is normally all i need. Great battery life.

This light definitely has a switch deterioration problem as evidenced by several other commenters. Streamlight has lousy customer support and i would not recommend buying any of their products.
