I love the pace ann patchett delivers in her books that is gentle and flowing and just keeps you wanting to turn the pages. This amazon mystery with moral dilemmas galore. One of my favorite all-time novels.
State of wonder is a story that conveys a wonderful adventure of stunning scope and scenery. This novels title is apt. Savor it until the end and remember to breathe.

For most of the book i really had a hard time finding any empathy for the shallow self absorbed characters

The main character marina is for most of the book a shallow boring woman who though clearly brilliant keeps her relationship with her much older boss a widower hidden from everyone she knows
