Pros

Spook country" is the latest in a long line of works by william gibson. The book is about the impact of computer-generated worlds on our own perception of reality, the atemporal nature of celebrity, and the threat of government control after 9/11. The...  Read More

This is a pretty darn good book, a nice book to read while waiting for the better book that is a betting certainty to follow. The book has a bad guy that you love to hate, moves pretty quickly. It is tense, innovative and superbly written.

In this novel, hollis henry has been hired by node magazine to write an article about locative art. Hollis is the former lead singer of curfew, a well respected band. Even hollis becomes an inadvertent counter-espionage agent for hubertus.

Spook country follows three characters -- hollis, tito, and milgrim. All three are likeable and sympathetic portrayals of relatable people. Milgrim had me a little stumped until i remembered professor stanley milgram's experiments.

Spook country is based on a merger of gps technology and virtual reality. It uses assisted-reality gear outfitted with gps. The main motif is the gigantic, red, terrifying, mongolian death worm.

Cons

It is not cyberpunk or science fiction, it is not about espionage or covert operations. Gibson's take on where tech is going fails to overcome the fact that the book becomes a tearing bore.

Spook country is a real disappointment. Some other spook-types try to stop them by forcing a * to read russian text messages. Oh, so lame indeed.

Wg. milgrim performs one action, one time. The same is true of milgrim and his heresy obsession. He says it all amounts to a scheme to prevent a measley $100 million from being laundered.
