I found a full manual online and discovered the problem to be the default standard video setting only accessible thru the remote when a disc is playing changing this setting to theater produced a bw picture equal to the s1700

Dont get me wrong this is a very good player with 3d bluetooth and streaming capabilities it just didnt do what i hoped for with dvds

This is a great player for dvds and 1080p bluray discs and even upscales them to near 4k quality if you have a 4k tv and even plays 3d bluray discs

Just make sure your hdmi cable between the player and the tv supports 4k signals if you want to do this otherwise it will play native quality no upscaling
