While the back edge is not razor sharp it is still a piece of metal that i would not want to touch my paint as it will damage it with normal vibration caused while driving

On my other vehicles i purchased a feltlike liner material with adhesive on one side at home depot and added it to the center and four corners of the license plate that way that soft material is contacting the vehicle paint instead of the metal frame or plate both of which will rub the paint away at areas of contact

Most cap and retainers are both plastic and the cap snaps onto the retainer as still shown in the photo as of 052018
