The board is a nylontype plastic which is the best and safest surface for cutting meat as it doesnt absorb any raw meat juiceswhich can be quite dangerous

The swedish cutting board functions more like a pair of extra hands and i really love it but if you are one handed its difficult to clean

I did keep the styrofoam block that covered the nails as they are totally exposed and present a safety hazard should a hand or finger slip

I have a bigger cutting board but the nails are too far apart its not as safe
