Pros & Cons
Pros
The book was recommended to me as a well-told and captivating story. Just really a great read though rather lengthy and dry. The book contains photographs interspersed in the text on regular stock (as opposed to glossy plates that give better resoluti... Read More

Adm. Evan thomas gives us four opposing leaders in the pacific war. Thomas delivers another excellent naval history.
Sea of thunder by evan thomas published by simon & shuster 2006 414 pps. Thomas is able to show the humanity, and inhumanity of war. He makes it a little more comprehensible.
Cons
The last stand of the tin can sailors is little more than a compilation of notes scarcely held together with some biographical threads. There are many other accounts of these events that are more accurate, engaging, and literate.
Thomas makes no mention of the fact that the source of this information, general sutherland, was a macarthur sycophant and a questionable source. The flyers on the japanese carriers were substandard.

The actions of commander evans captain of the destroyer johnston were in keeping with the best traditions of the us navy
Perhaps the author should have located these diagrams better with the narrative
After all i the reader identified with the two americans but less so with the japanese
Shipping
There are times that i felt like i was there on the bridge of the ship with the command leadership of the fleets
Kuritas actions have also been criticized because he did not carry out his orders to destroy the ships in the gulf
Competitiveness
This book gives an excellnt account from both sides

Most of the fighting ink is expended on leyte gulf but by the time this battle or series of battles took place the imperial japanese navy was a shadow of what it had been and in no position to do any serious damage to the us pacific campaign

Once again the inability to communicate changes the possible outcome

The maps are mostly general in nature and do not give a very detailed description of the fighting at leyte gulf but are in my opinion sufficient
