Pros

The book was recommended to me as a well-told and captivating story. Just really a great read though rather lengthy and dry. The book contains photographs interspersed in the text on regular stock (as opposed to glossy plates that give better resoluti...  Read More

Sea of four commanders and the last great naval campaign 1941-1945 by evan thomas, takes you into the mindset of four commanders. Just about half of the book is taken up leading up to the *, the account of the battle off samar itself. The book ends wi...  Read More

The battle of the bulge gives us insight into the two u. S. Admirals and the japanese admirals. Most interesting is the account of successfully attacking and killing admiral yamamoto in his airplane. It's interesting to see that yamamoto did not like ...  Read More

Adm. Evan thomas gives us four opposing leaders in the pacific war. Thomas delivers another excellent naval history.

Sea of thunder by evan thomas published by simon & shuster 2006 414 pps. Thomas is able to show the humanity, and inhumanity of war. He makes it a little more comprehensible.

Cons

The last stand of the tin can sailors is little more than a compilation of notes scarcely held together with some biographical threads. There are many other accounts of these events that are more accurate, engaging, and literate.

Thomas makes no mention of the fact that the source of this information, general sutherland, was a macarthur sycophant and a questionable source. The flyers on the japanese carriers were substandard.

After all i the reader identified with the two americans but less so with the japanese

There are times that i felt like i was there on the bridge of the ship with the command leadership of the fleets

Kuritas actions have also been criticized because he did not carry out his orders to destroy the ships in the gulf

Dont be fooled by the title it is not overly dramatized for cheap entertainment effect but the facts are dramatic enough

Even film does not capture the action and feelings of the crew as well as evan thomas does

If you are looking for a balanced account of the naval war in the pacific this is not it

Thus pearl harbor get a few pages coral sea is barely mentioned and midway the most important sea battle of the war gets only a cursory treatment as halsey was sick back in hawaii at the time

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Most of the fighting ink is expended on leyte gulf but by the time this battle or series of battles took place the imperial japanese navy was a shadow of what it had been and in no position to do any serious damage to the us pacific campaign

Once again the inability to communicate changes the possible outcome

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The maps are mostly general in nature and do not give a very detailed description of the fighting at leyte gulf but are in my opinion sufficient
