Pros & Cons

Pros

Sainsmart 16 relay board is an inexpensive bargain. Good solid pc board, good support electronics, hearty relay contacts. This particular 16-channel relay board is being used to play with heavier lighting loads.

The 5 volt converter is a lm2576 12v to 5v 3 amp converter. It has an input for 12vdc to operate the coil driver amplifier chips, and the relay coils.

Works as advertised. Qc issues notwithstanding. Check out some forums to find my pdf.

For an arduino, use these two lines of code to activate a relay. This turns the pin into a receiver and therefor a higher impedance.

The voltage flowing from the arduino to the relay completes the circuit by flowing back to gnd on the arduino.

Cons

As stated by many other reviewers this board is active low which is a nuisance but not impossible to work with. No diagrams or schematics at all with this thing.

Quality

As expected for a quality designed product

Im impressed with the construction and with the price

Instead the gpio supplies a tiny amount of power just to turn the transistor on

Now when the gpio pin applies voltage it opens the transistor which sends the relay signal to ground turning it on

Price

8ma is a sink current that means your up board has to sink 3

Packaging/appearance

This has the added benefit of not grounding the signal wire through the gpio pins which can only handle a very small current

The 5v pins on the pi are to power external devices and should never be connected to the gpio pins connecting to ground pins is ok

Competitiveness

Connect all your gpio pins to the numbered trigger pins4th

5 because there are schematics and pcb layouts on the sainsmart website

But a raspberry pis gpio pins do not run on 5v they only work with 3

This one will not run on a 5v source

Do not connect the 5v to your pi sbc this board has its on 5v power output more on that below2nd

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Connect the ground only one of them from the relay board to your pi sbc and leave 5v from relay out of the equation not doing this can fry your device or have it constantly powered on you can use 5v and gnd to power a pi without usb

Recommend about 1a i am getting away with 12v 500ma just fine but ymmmv

If you want one 12vdc source to run this an arduino or other proto device that draws lt1 amp at 5v itd probably run it all day

Dont have a current meter or id report on that

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

I got a surprise when i unplugged my pi but it stayed on lol

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

You may want to leave the 5v pins disconnected from pi if you want to avoid all this and stick to normal operation

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Unfortunately amazon has joined giant tech in cancel culture or callout culture a modern form of ostracism in which conservative americans are being thrust out of social or professional circles either online on social media in the real world or both
