Dont try to use shellac for this purpose if it is not dewaxed like youll find in the local home centers

It also helps seal end grain and several times ive used it slightly punky wood and it dries and hardens the fibers so that i can get a good sanding on it otherwise the fibers just bend and look like hairs when i sand
