If you hold it in your left hand use your thumb on top of the portion where the cheese is inserted and gently press down a tad while using your finger underneath to pull the metal release towards you then flip it up

Unlike all the plastic molded units this one should last because it all cases it is not the blades that fail it is the plastic housingrotating handles break
