It can be read as a stand alone book but if you were to read the first one in the series the de valery code you will get even more out of some of the side characters

I did find the relationship between elijah and his mother a little confusing and there was no real closure there we know they dont really care for each other but honestly we dont know why she behaved as she did it felt like there was a story there it just was never told
