Thanks to the many positive reviews that mirrored what the manufacturer told me i decided id order a new probe and that was all it took

So if you have a brookstone grill alert that isnt working and youre sure the batteries arent the problem you most likely need a new probe even if there is no apparent damage to the one that came with the original unit

I bought it in frustration that such expendable items could not be bought separately from the two other digital thermometer suppliers

Made the mistake of soaking the first one in the sink not a good idea

Otherwise the high cost of the grill alert would not be worth it
