Just submerge the siphon end til its full then hold that high so it starts to fill the tubing then submerge the siphon end again and your suction will start automatically as the water is already in the tube heading for the bucket.

The only complaint i have is that it drains the tank pretty quickly, so the hose needs to be pinched in order to let me have time to get all the gravel clean.

I have to restart the siphon to unclog it every 2 gallons or so.

However, it is very awkward trying to immerse the whole unit in the small tank to start siphon per instructions.

I had to use it as an angle because (using the up and down motion suggested in instructions) gravel kept getting sucked up and clogged the tube.
