The hook that really drew me into this relentless tale of deception murder and betrayal was that the author allowed us into the mind of our hero we are there with him all the way

I know he is honor bound to the emperor but in serving him he is also dangerously misled at times by conspirators seriously endangering him

There is a tense countdown to a will they make it or not major plot device that keeps you wanting to know how they will pull this off until the last pages

Cleander who is a true historical character and who is as vile as the book shows and the previous books needs to be overthrown in order to bring peace to the city of rome
