Your thyroid does not care what form of iodine it gets so if it gets the potassium iodide instead of the radioactive iodine it wont know the difference
But you have to get the potassium iodide in you and already being absorbed by your thyroid before the radioactive iodine gets there or it will stick with the radioactive iodine and the potassium iodide will pass right through instead
