There are 5 functions in ppc marathonwhere you play until your stack reaches the top challenge where you battle the gym leaders of the johto line clear where you try to clear all the blocks above a line puzzle where you try to clear all the blocks in a certain amount of moves and garbage which is just like marathon only garbage falls from the top of the screen

This promoted more of the anime than the game though given the choice of pokemon you had despite the fact you were playing gold rather than ash

The game has almost no plot

The twist is in this mode depending on the difficulty depends on how far you go in the actual game

There are other modes too such as puzzle mode where you have to solve a puzzle with a limited amount of moves time mode garbage mode removing the blocks and marathon mode similar to garbage mode only affects the speed rather than the garbage thrown on you
