    I find nothing of the sort, and such qualified approval simply reveals a tendency to seek political correctness (as defined by the reviewer) in the text.

    Instead of believing, as i was taught as a callow youth, that the constitution is a grand, nearly perfect document hammered out by noble and brilliant patriots, i now understand that it is an extremely human instrument that came close to not existing at all.

    The final draft--held up by delegates from several states who essentially extorted their approval, since they said they would not sign unless they got their way--was approved only because of deep, painful compromises that made it into a highly flawed document.

    And yet, beeman points out, without those painful, even heinous compromises (especially regarding slavery), there would have been no united states of america.
