Distance right until about through third time i unhooked it from my camera and the connector totally fell apart

I took some long exposures and all was well except today i tried to take a group photo and i couldnt get it to actuate the shutter on my d750i almost think its the cable that plugs into the body

There are only two ways you can connect the cable to the camera using this connector

If you have it the wrong way no part of the metal connector from the cable will go into the camera

My problem was that some of the metal connector would go into the camera but it didnt seem to make a solid connection

Ive never connected anything to the camera before and didnt want to use too much force as i was afraid i would break something
