You can only use the top 2 buttons with a dslr

All you have to do is set your camera to accept signal from a remote

On the t3i this can be done through a separate button just on top of the circular main button area

When you click that follow the options on the lcd screen to choose that indicates remote symbol as well

There are no instructions that come along but it was not that hard to figure it out

You do have to be very much straight on to get the remote to trigger the camera
