Owen and chrysanthemum by kevin henkes. Henkes makes the characters very uniquely. He is also an illustrator, and the illustrations for this book are beautiful.

My granddaughter is 5, so she does not read yet. They teach children helpful lessons through fun and memorable stories. The chapter book format helps them feel very grown-up and accomplished.
