It is a silicone mat so that it can be peeled up and moved. The moisture in the dough seems to make the flour less slippery and the dough becomes more sticky as a result. The marking are handy for getting the pizza the right size.

Cons

It's very big and difficult to manage when soaking and washing in the sink. This thing is a nuisance to clean. Just spread some flour on your countertop.
